LOYD ELWOOD STRINGER

Loyd Elwood Stringer was a Machinist Mate Second Class aboard the USS Utah AG16, December 7th, 1941.  The

 Elwood Stringer
American Legion
   Post 325

Flatwoods, Kentucky

was named to honor our shipmate as the first Flatwoods, Kentucky man to die in World war II.

To our knowledge he is the only USS Utah Survivor to have an American Legion Post named in his honor.

Shipmate Stringer's first duty station following Pearl Harbor appears to have been to the Cruiser USS Detroit (CL8)      Apparently he went from the Detroit to the Destroyer USS Barton (DD599) some time prior to November 1942.

The Barton was lost off Savo Island, just north of Guadalcanal on 13 November 1942.

Anyone reading this who knew Shipmate Stringer or who has more photos or memorabila of him, please contact WmHughes@attbi.com
