Retired Navy Cmdr. Adolph "Ski" Czerwenka, "a Pearl Harbor survivor and an American hero," returned "home" to be with his shipmates yesterday.
In reviewing Czerwenka's life and his experiences during the 1941 Japanese attack, Jim Taylor, the Navy's funeral honors coordinator, said: "Ski was a good man who cherished his family and who constantly put others before himself. His first love, though, was always the Navy."
Yesterday, Czerwenka's ashes were scattered near the wreck of the battleship USS Utah by Petty Officer Carl Christian.

PEARL HARBOR SURVIVORS ASHES SCATTERED:
Another Pearl Harbor Survivor's ashes were scattered in harbor waters today, August 31 2003, from USS Utah Memorial.
World War II submariner Darrell Allen, a Pearl Harbor survivor, had a simple request -- to be buried at sea when he died.
But with the help of his grandson, Petty Officer Evan Allen, who followed his grandfather into the Navy, and Capt. Pam Markiewicz, skipper of the amphibious assault vessel USS Peleliu, Darrell Allen's ashes yesterday were scattered over the waters of Pearl Harbor.

Burial Service for Hank Freitas – USS Tangier (AV8)
[The following information was obtained by a guest book post and an e-mail from Mr. Jim Hendricks]
"I was at the USS Utah Memorial last Thursday, August 19,2004 to attend a burial service for my brother-in-law, Henry R.(Hank) Freitas, who was on the USS Tangier, AV8 on Dec.7,1941 and was a longtime PHSA member and officer. His wish was to have his cremains placed near where the Tangier was tied up, next to the Utah. The service was conducted on the memorial by Navy and PHSA members. What a beautiful memorial to those who served our country."
[E-Mail]
"My brother-in-law, Hank Freitas passed away on June 9,2003 which was his 82nd birthday. His wish was carried out this August at the USS Utah Memorial, as I wrote in my letter. Yes, Jim Taylor is still the contact person for these functions. He was the one who coordinated our service and he is a fine gentleman who was a great help indeed to our family in arranging
for our loved one's return to Pearl Harbor. I will reply a little later with details of Hank's
service in the Navy if you desire.
Thanks again for maintaining the [USS UTAH] website. It is very informational and useful for research into that moment in our nation's history."
Sincerely,
Jim Hendricks[Ed. Note: USS Tangier (AV8) a Seaplane Tender was anchored in berth Fox-10, aft of USS Utah when the Japanese launched their attack.]
