LIFE ABOARD A BOMBING TARGET SHIP This page was created in order to provide insight to the ship's routine during period of bombing exercises with our aircraft. We like to believe the experience received by pilots while practice bombing the Utah was of great value in the war that was to be thrust upon us. The words "bombing quarters" meant that all hands would take cover until the "secure from bombing" word was given.
Personnel in the conning tower, and some other secured places with port holes or observation points could see some of the outside world. For most of us it meant living below decks; no sunlight and fresh air only through the ventilation system. For viewers who may be confused by military time, remember two things; 0530 = 5:30AM, and 2200 = 10:00PM. It was a long day with no overtime. For these 16 1/2 hours days the starting pay scale was $36.00 per month and keep. (Pay Grade E2)
