THE UTAH TODAY
Persons visiting the Utah today see what appears to be an undistinguishable part of the vessel. Actually, the ship is laying on it's side. We recently received a unique underwater photo taken of the Utah in October 2001 showing the top of the ship.
The photo was taken by Mr. Rob Williamson, an employee of Marine Sonic Technology Ltd, the company that manufactures the Sea Scan PC, a high resolution marine side scan sonar system - http//www.marinesonic.com.
Mr. Williamson was in Hawaii training the 7th Engineer Detachment (Diving), 29th Engineer Battalion (Topographic) Ft. Shafter, HI on their sonar system, and was working in the vicinity of Ford Island. He took the opportunity to scan the USS Utah, collecting some beautiful underwater sonic images which show the ship in good condition below the water. Below is one of the images Mr. Williamson sent.
