USS UTAH MEMORIAL

On December 7, 2006, the National Park Service and the U.S. Navy hosted Pearl Harbor Survivors from across the nation with a very special tribute in their honor. This ceremony featured keynote speaker Tom Brokaw, the Honorable Linda Lingle, Morning Colors, wreath presentations, a rifle salute, a Missing Man Flyover and other tributes.

Various other ceremonies and events happened, such as the groundbreaking ceremony for the USS OKLAHOMA Memorial on Ford Island, as well as the Opening of the Pacific Aviation Museum, also on Ford Island.  Some Utah survivors attended several of the events.  However,  this web site's major theme relates to the USS UTAH, it's crew members, both living and deceased, and to their many descendants. thus we will endeavor to report on the events relating to our old ship. .

Six Utah Survivors were in Hawaii for this commemoration of the 1941 attack.  It certainly was not a celebration; it was a time to reflect and honor shipmates who gave their lives that December 7th. Some may have died not knowing  we were under attack by Japan.  For Survivors of that tragic day it was truly a time to reflect and be thankful for the 65 year extension of our own lives.

Several news agencies were there covering the events.  The main event on the morning of December 7th was the most talked about and filmed event.  The Keynote Speaker was Mr. Tom Brokaw, the former NBC News Anchorman who has written extensively of what he calls  "Greatest Generation." and is highly respected in our ranks.
