The lives of sailors shown in these photos are about to change.  Not only will they wear a new uniform, but they will assume the additional leadership duties of Chief Petty Officers in the USN. It has been stated many times, and to our knowledge, without rebuttal, that the Chief's are the "Backbone of the Navy." The CPO tradition goes back over 100 years and a proud tradition it is.
